Inauguration of 6,000 School Buildings

Kabul, October 18, 2018 – The construction of 6,000 school building by the Citizens’ Charter National Priority Program of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD/CCNPP) was officially inaugurated in Qol-e-Niamat village, Guldara district, Kabul province today. These school buildings will be constructed based on the instruction of H.E Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the foundation stone was laid by H.E Humayon Qayumi, Senior Advisor to the President in Infrastructure Affairs and Acting Minister of Finance (MoF), H.E Mujib Rahman Karimi the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) and H.E Mirwais Balkhi, acting Minister of Education (MoE). Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Qayumi said: “The construction of 6,000 school buildings is one of the greatest achievements of the Afghan government which will provide healthy learning environment for around two million children, enhance the quality of education, create employment for thousands of citizens as well as improve access to quality education in the villages across the country”.

Mr. Mujeeb Rahman Karimi also speaking at the ceremony said: “Based on specific instruction and attention of the President for standardizing and providing a healthy and desirable educational system, the President named the current year as Year of Education and thus, pledged the construction of 6,000 school buildings across the country. Today we are pleased to practically start the construction of these schools within this education year”. Mr. Karimi added; “the construction of the 6,000 school buildings will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, around 2,647 school buildings will be constructed in 17 provinces including Kabul, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Logar, Khost, Wardak, Ghazni, Paktika, Kunduz, Balkh, Faryab, Herat, Badghis, Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan and Zabul provinces. Among these schools, 1,208 will be combined boys’ and girls’ schools while the rest will be only for boys. In total, USD 175 million has been allocated to the construction of these 6,000 school buildings”.

Mr. Karimi continued that 28 types of designs considering climatic and geographical conditions, have been developed into four categories comprised of 6, 8, 10, and 12 classroom schools respectively with local construction materials for use. He also stated that around 8,262,000 labor days will be created by the implementation of this project.

H.E Mirwais Balkhi, acting Minister of Education said in his speech: “upon construction of these 6,000 school buildings, 80% of MoE’s challenges will be resolved in terms of access to school buildings”. According to him, around 50% of schools do not have buildings. He thanked the President Office, Dr. Qayumi and the MRRD for their tireless efforts in this regard, suggesting to complete these school buildings and hand over to MoE within the promised timeframe considering the quality and needs of the Ministry of Education.  

It is worth mentioning that the construction of 6,000 school buildings will provide 2,16 million students with appropriate and healthy learning environment while creating 18.3 million labor days as whole.
