Handover of a 450-Meter Irrigation Canal in Logar

Kabul, June 09, 2021 – A 450-meter irrigation canal worth AFN 1.86 million funded by the Citizens’ Charter National Priority Program of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD/CCNPP) including 10% community contribution (financial, labor or in-kind) has been constructed in Logar province.

The canal project has been designed to supply water to 280 jiribs of land which directly benefits a total of 64 families in Baghar Dobandi village of Khoshi district.

Taking the employment generation and economic recovery into consideration, a total of 1,538 labor days have been created for both skilled and unskilled local laborers during the project implementation.  

As of now, the MRRD/CCNPP has been able to complete 2,254 projects in Irrigation Sector which includes the construction of irrigation canals and protection walls across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. These canals have helped irrigate more than 91,477 Jiribs (18,295 hectares) of land which directly benefits 315,082 households in many communities. Meanwhile, around 137,107 meters of concrete and gabion protection walls, that play a pivotal role in protecting the agricultural lands against seasonal floods and potential disasters, have been built under the MRRD/CCNPP since its inception in October 2016.

It is worth mentioning that another 2,095 MRRD/CCNPP funded projects in Irrigation Sector are currently underway. Once completed, these projects will benefit 294,634 households in various rural communities across Afghanistan.
