Electricity is one of the most important blessings for mankind

Citizens’ Charter Afghanistan Program (CCAP) is delivering standard and basic services so that all citizens have access to minimum standard services. Through this program, among other services, electricity is also in the list as one of minimum standard service for urban population covering provincial centers in Afghanistan.

The Deputy Ministry of Municipalities of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) through the CCAP – always release their best practices, lessons learned, stories and press releases to their stakeholders and beneficiaries, who is the responsible authority in management of urban practices to inspire and implement the vision set through the overarching programs like the Citizens’ Charter Afghanistan Program.

It’s evident that not only rural population, but the urban population in some cities have no access to electricity, clean drinking water and roads. Meanwhile, only limited percent of Afghans have access to electricity in the cities, leaving the majority of the population dependent on alternatives such as kerosene and firewood, which destroy the environment and fill homes with unhealthy smoke and fumes. The Citizens’ Charter program strives to address these basic services using a community driven approach, that has proven more inclusive and successful in Afghanistan.

To address the challenge of electricity in the ITEFAQ ISLAM Gozar of Nahia 12 of the Herat city, the communities following the social mobilization process, decided to establish a standard solar energy system in the neighborhood by installing 3 poles of solar lights in the main and surrounding streets.

In addition to concreting roads and streets and construction of water canals and drains, the electricity poles were installed in a standard way and under the direct supervision of the locals, which has also led to order and stability and safe movement during the night for the locals and 8,330 residents directly benefiting from these projects.

It is worth mentioning that ITEFAQ ISLAM community development council has gone an extra mile implementing a livelihood project (tailoring and beadworks) for women. The total cost of these projects are AFN thirteen million and forty thousand, which were funded by the CCAP. These projects have created, 1015 working days for skilled labors and 2780 working days for unskilled labors.
