Access of Six Hundred (600) Households to Clean Drinking Water

Six hundred households of Okhowat and Tawheed Development Councils located at district 15 of Herat city benefited from clean drinking from a water supply network constructed by Citizen’s Charter Program.

This area also known as Afsaran town was established in 2003, and since then the residents were not having access to clean drinking water and faced many problems.

According to the residents, they were using hand pumps to meet their needs but the water was unhealthy because it had salt and was salty and the residents were suffering from various diseases. From economic perspective, each family needed to spend AFN 4 to 5 thousands in order to clean the well because the wells were getting dry and could not meet the needs of the residents.

Since Citizens Charter begin its activities and prepared its development plans, the residents of the area prioritized their needs and requested Citizens Charter program to construct a water supply network. After a technical survey and preparation of proposal, construction of the water supply network started and now it has been completed.  The network is 15 KM long with a 135-meter-deep well and underground water storage with capacity of 400 cubic meter water. It is worth mentioning that the network is equipped with 25 kilowatt solar electricity. With the construction of the water supply network, 600 families are able to have access to safe drinking water.

The local residents expressed their happiness with the construction of water supply network and appreciated activities of Citizens Charter Program that created a path for unity, peace and mutual acceptance among citizens, positive changes in their mind-set, growth of youth and women and development of urban areas.
